Seal Grout planning guide
Use this quick guide with your rough grout sealing estimate to think through tiled area size, location, grout line density, grout condition, sealer type, cleaning prep, wet-area risk, and whether the grout needs repair before sealing.
What affects this estimate
- Tile area size and whether it is floor, backsplash, shower wall, bathroom floor, or entry tile
- Large tile, standard tile, or small tile with many grout lines
- Clean, stained, worn, cracked, missing, or moldy grout condition
- Basic penetrating sealer, premium sealer, wet-area sealer, and cleaning/prep level
Basic materials/tools
Materials
- • Penetrating grout sealer or wet-area grout sealer
- • Grout cleaner, applicator brush or bottle, gloves, towels, and cleanup supplies
- • Masking or protection supplies for nearby surfaces if needed
Tools
- • Applicator brush, bottle, sponge, or microfiber cloths
- • Cleaner and scrub brush for prep before sealing
- • Gloves and ventilation appropriate for the selected sealer
Before you start
- 1Confirm the grout is sound enough to seal and does not need repair first.
- 2Clean and dry the grout before estimating sealer quantity and time.
- 3Use wet-area caution for showers and bathrooms where failed grout may hide water damage.
Watch out for
- Sealing over cracked, missing, loose, moldy, or wet grout.
- Assuming sealer will fix shower leaks or failed waterproofing.
- Skipping cleaning prep and trapping stains under sealer.
