Install Quarter Round planning guide
Use this quick guide with your rough quarter round estimate to think through flooring perimeter length, trim material, corner count, old trim removal, paint or stain finish needs, wall and floor condition, and moisture risk.
What affects this estimate
- Linear feet of flooring perimeter trim and number of rooms
- MDF, pine, PVC, or prefinished quarter round material
- Inside and outside corners, old trim removal, finish paint, stain, or cut-end touch-up
- Uneven floors, wavy walls, large expansion gaps, stained wood matching, and moisture-damaged trim
Basic materials/tools
Materials
- • Quarter round or shoe molding with waste allowance
- • Finish nails, caulk, filler, touch-up paint, stain, or sealant as selected
- • Removal, cleanup, and floor-protection supplies if old trim is coming off
Tools
- • Tape measure, pencil, saw, and miter box or miter saw
- • Nailer, hammer, nail set, or other fastening tools
- • Caulk gun, filler tools, paint brush, or stain supplies as needed
Before you start
- 1Measure the flooring perimeter and count inside and outside corners before buying trim.
- 2Choose quarter round material and finish based on the floor, baseboard, and room moisture conditions.
- 3Check whether large gaps, damaged baseboards, or moisture issues should be repaired before adding trim.
Watch out for
- Treating quarter round as a fix for large flooring gaps, uneven floors, or moisture damage.
- Buying too little trim for waste, corners, and bad cuts.
- Assuming stained or prefinished trim will match without testing cut ends and color.
