DIY planning notes

Install Parking Aid planning guide

Use this quick guide with your rough parking aid estimate to think through parking aid type, number of parking spots, ceiling, wall, or floor mounting, garage height, power needs, visibility, and vehicle clearance.

What affects this estimate

  • Hanging marker, wheel stop, laser guide, or sensor/stop aid type
  • Number of parking spots and whether alignment is simple or tight
  • Ceiling, wall, or floor mounting surface
  • Battery, plug-in, no-power, or hardwired/uncertain power condition

Basic materials/tools

Materials

  • Parking marker, wheel stop, laser guide, or sensor parking aid
  • Mounting hooks, screws, anchors, batteries, or plug-in accessories as needed
  • Layout markers, measuring tape, and visibility/alignment supplies

Tools

  • Tape measure, level, pencil, and layout markers
  • Drill or driver and bits for wall or ceiling mounting
  • Ladder or step stool if ceiling mounting is selected

Before you start

  1. 1Confirm vehicle stopping point, door swing, walking path, and garage door clearance before placing the aid.
  2. 2Choose a power-free, battery, or plug-in aid unless electrical work is already safely available.
  3. 3Check visibility and alignment from the driver position before permanent mounting.

Watch out for

  • Installing a marker where it interferes with the garage door, walking path, or vehicle sensors.
  • Treating hardwired electrical or missing outlet work as a simple parking-aid install.
  • Creating a floor trip hazard or ceiling-mounted item with poor visibility.
