Rough estimate only

This tool is for replacing one existing wall thermostat in the same location only. It may include a smart thermostat, wall plate or trim plate, wire labels, batteries if needed, basic mounting hardware, small drywall touch-up allowance, tool allowance, and setup time. It does not include running new thermostat wire, adding a new C-wire, HVAC control board work, zoning systems, line-voltage thermostats, communicating or proprietary HVAC systems, heat pump troubleshooting, furnace repair, electrical panel work, permits, or professional labor. Turn HVAC power off before working. Call an HVAC professional if wiring compatibility, C-wire requirements, or system type is uncertain. Real costs can change based on local prices, thermostat type, HVAC system type, C-wire status, wiring condition, wall condition, setup needs, tool needs, and cleanup.

Measurement system

One thermostat in the same location

Estimate replacing one existing wall thermostat with a smart thermostat in the same location only. This does not include running new thermostat wire, adding a C-wire, HVAC control board work, zoning systems, line-voltage thermostats, proprietary systems, furnace repair, permits, or professional labor.

Compatibility and HVAC safety

Turn HVAC power off before working. Call an HVAC pro if wiring compatibility, C-wire status, or system type is uncertain.

Project planning note

Review the selected options, site condition, material assumptions, and tool needs before buying supplies. This calculator is meant for rough DIY planning, not a professional quote.

Compatibility note

Turn HVAC power off before working. Confirm compatibility before disconnecting wires, especially for heat pumps, boilers, missing C-wires, old wiring, or proprietary systems. If anything is uncertain, call an HVAC pro.

Recommended materials/tools

  • Basic smart thermostat allowance
  • C-wire present
  • Wall plate or small wall touch-up allowance included
  • Wire labels, batteries if needed, mounting hardware, and cleanup supplies
  • Basic tool allowance included

Basic DIY checklist

  • Check thermostat compatibility with the HVAC system before buying or opening the box.
  • Turn HVAC power off at the breaker or service switch before removing the existing thermostat.
  • Take a clear photo of existing wiring and label every wire before disconnecting anything.
  • Mount the wall plate or thermostat base, connect wires exactly according to the compatibility guide, and avoid letting wires fall into the wall.
  • Restore HVAC power, complete app or Wi-Fi setup, and test heating and cooling modes one at a time.
  • Keep the old thermostat until the new thermostat has been tested successfully.

When to call a pro

  • Call an HVAC pro if thermostat compatibility, wire labels, C-wire status, or HVAC system type is uncertain.
  • Do not work on line-voltage thermostats, communicating/proprietary systems, HVAC control boards, or electrical panels as a simple DIY thermostat swap.

This is a rough DIY planning estimate for replacing one existing wall thermostat in the same location only. It does not include new thermostat wire, C-wire installation, HVAC control board work, zoning systems, line-voltage thermostats, proprietary systems, furnace repair, permits, or professional labor.
