This tool is for installing or replacing basic weatherstripping on existing doors or windows only. It may include adhesive foam tape, rubber or V-strip weatherstripping, kerf-style door seal, door sweep, threshold seal, caulk if selected, cleaning supplies, basic tools, and cleanup supplies. It does not include replacing doors, replacing windows, repairing rotten frames, correcting major door alignment problems, replacing thresholds, structural repairs, professional air-sealing work, insulation work, or professional labor. Real costs can change based on local prices, number of openings, opening size, weatherstripping type, door or window alignment, surface material, removal needs, fit adjustment needs, tool needs, and cleanup.
Project planning note
Review the selected options, site condition, material assumptions, and tool needs before buying supplies. This calculator is meant for rough DIY planning, not a professional quote.
Fit/seal note
This estimate assumes existing doors or windows are basically usable and just need new seals. Weatherstripping helps most when surfaces are clean, gaps are modest, and the door or window opens and closes correctly.
Recommended materials/tools
- Weatherstripping for about 22 ft including waste
- 1 opening included in this estimate
- Door sweep, threshold seal, or side/top door seal allowance included where selected
- No caulk or sealant allowance selected
- Cleaning supplies, scraper, utility knife blades, small fasteners if needed, and cleanup supplies
- Basic tool allowance included
Basic DIY checklist
- Measure each door or window perimeter and confirm the weatherstripping style matches the opening.
- Remove loose old weatherstripping, adhesive residue, dirt, and grease before installing new material.
- Dry fit the weatherstripping, then cut pieces slightly long and trim for a snug fit.
- Install side and top seals first, then door sweep or threshold seal if selected.
- Close the door or window and check for light leaks, drafts, rubbing, or latch problems.
- Test operation several times and adjust before calling the project done.
When to call a pro
- Call a pro if new weatherstripping does not stop drafts because the opening is badly warped, misaligned, or damaged.
- Call a pro for rotten frames, replacement doors or windows, threshold replacement, structural repairs, insulation work, or professional air sealing.
This is a rough DIY planning estimate for basic weatherstripping on existing doors or windows only. It does not include door or window replacement, rotten frame repair, major alignment correction, threshold replacement, structural repairs, insulation work, professional air sealing, or labor.
